Gary Carpenter discusses his new tenor saxophone concerto

On Friday 21 February 2014, the BBC Philharmonic will give the world premiere performance of Gary Carpenter's SET, Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and orchestra, with renowned soloist Iain Ballamy. Here they discuss how the piece came into being, and how - unusually for a concerto - it allows Iain to improvise freely whilst keeping the overall form in place. To finish, we hear Gary's charming orchestral piece, Fred and Ginger.

Composer Gary Carpenter (pictured) talks about his new tenor saxophone concerto, written for Iain Ballamy.
